Faux Rocks Facts And Faux Rocks Shopping Tips

Faux rocks are used in a variety of manners. One of the most popular ways to use a faux rock is as a cover to hide a variety of objects such as septic tanks, well pumps, utility boxes,  vents, outlets, irrigation equipment, and other items. Hiding these items is a great way to enhance your property and add to the landscape surrounding your home. Following is some information on what to look for when shopping for high-quality Faux rocks.

Faux rocks come in many different shapes and sizes. Colors and textures also vary greatly. When looking for a model to purchase its important to first measure the object you wish to cover. And try to keep the object in mind while you look at different rock models. If is something unique about the object like something that sticks out at a particular point or something that protrudes in one direction or another you want to be sure the model you Faux Rocks For Lesschoose can accommodate this. Also if the object you intend to cover is going to require regular maintenance it is important to consider faux rocks that are lightweight and easily removed so the object can be accessed. Although this can be somewhat of a catch 22 because models that are easy for people to move are also easy easily removed by mother nature. A gust of wind can make a quick kite of even the largest models of faux rocks.

Faux Rocks Can Fly!

To combat this it is crucial to choose faux rocks that incorporate some sort of staking system that hold them securely in place yet are also easy to remove when necessary. Higher end models always include some kind of fastening system. Even in areas where wind is not believed to be a problem, this is important to keep pests from getting into areas where they should not be, and to prevent vandalism and access from curious toddlers.  It is preferred to use hi impact plastic stakes because they will not rust.  Very small faux rocks or ones that lay very flat and low to the ground do not always need to be staked.

Lawnmowers and weed eaters do not fare well with faux rocks. If placement is in an area where mowing and trimming will occur it is crucial to find a model with thick sidewalls to provide protection from impact damage. Anything thinner than 1/4 inch thick walls can be problematic and is usually a sign of a cheaply made product that is best left on the store shelf. Imitation rocks with thin plastic walls are also prone to becoming brittle from freeze thaw cycles and UV rays.  Thin plastic faux rocks also tend to look cheesy because the plastic does not allow for much textured depth and variation.

Faux Rocks TexturesAnother important factor to keep in mind when looking for faux rocks is to make sure you look closely at both the exterior AND interior dimensions.  It's a common mistake made by many to measure the object desired to be hidden, and then compare the measurements to the rock's exterior dimensions in determining if it will be large enough.  Please don't make this mistake!  You need to take a close look at the interior dimensions and make Faux Rock Staking Systemsure they allow for enough width, height, and length.  No model is perfectly round or perfectly square.  They have indentations and fluctuations in texture that can effect the total amount of useable interior space.  Ideally the retailer can assist you or provide you with a detailed chart of useable interior dimensions for you to consider when shopping for faux rocks. If you purchase one that ends up being a tad too small many times you can remedy this by throwing some soil or mulch around the object you are trying to hide so the rock will ride a bit higher.  Most faux hollow rocks lose more and more interior space with object height.  So the lower the object is, the wider and longer it can be effectively covered.

A Faux Rock Picture Means A Thousand Words!

If you are going to purchase faux rocks online don't be afraid to ask the retailer for additional product photos.  Different brands can vary greatly when it comes to realism, and the last thing you want out in your yard hiding an ugly septic cover or well pump is an unattractive, obviously fake, plastic chunk of poorly made rock.  If you're leery about a particular brand don't be afraid to ask professionals like landscape designers what their thoughts are.  Chances are they've seen them all and know which models look the best and hold up well over time.  Here are a few models that get good reviews for these specific applications:
